I built an AI homework tutor for parents, not kids

When my kid's worksheet did not match the method in my head, I built [Methodwise](https://methodwise.co), an AI chat that coaches parents through the exact problem in front of them, surfaces the gap underneath it, and gives you the words to say next.

My kid sat down with a math problem I knew I could solve. I showed them how I'd learned it, and somehow they were more confused than before. It wasn't that I was wrong. It was that the method on the worksheet didn't match the one in my head. And when those don't line up, kids stop trusting the answer, and they start doubting themselves.

I kept thinking about how many parents were having that same moment with their own kids. Decomposing numbers, place value, ratios, text structure, things their teachers introduce in a very specific way that most of us never saw growing up. I didn't want to teach the kids. I wanted to coach the parent, in the moment, on the exact problem in front of them.

That became Methodwise. It's an AI chat tutor for parents. You drop in the homework question your kid is stuck on, like 'how do I decompose 47,' and Methodwise scaffolds it: it walks you through the method their teacher is likely using, surfaces the underlying knowledge gap that's actually tripping your kid up (often something like shaky place value understanding), and then hands you step-by-step coaching language you can say out loud. There's a small library of short videos too, but the chat is the heart of it.

I built it with Claude Code, Next.js, GitHub, Supabase, Vercel, Stripe, Google OAuth, and an Anthropic API call powering the tutoring itself. If you want the longer build story, my case study on Methodwise goes deep on the design and product decisions.

If you're a parent wondering when math got rebranded, that's exactly who I built it for.
